Three documents are required for European travel of
registered & non registered horses
1. Horse passport* for more information please see
www.hoofmove.co.uk/horsepassports.php
2. International trade animal health certificate (TRACES) please see DEFRA animal health certificate application
The TRACES certificate requires a vet inspection no more than 48 hours prior to export
3. Export licence for horses
over 14.2hh (147cm) including foals at the foot of dams
DEFRA export licence application form
less than 14.2hh (147cm)
DEFRA export licence application form
* Required for all travel, national and international.
When applying for an export licence for a pony (14.2hh and under), it is necessary to supply proof of the ponies minimum value. Documents that can be accepted are given below and this must be submitted with the application form. 1. Bill of sale/invoice, typed, on headed paper, which includes all vendor, purchaser (including full contact address & telephone numbers for both) & pony details. It must include an individual price, original signature & date. (a document that is more than 6 months old is not acceptable) Please note, DEFRA will not accept hand written documents. 2. Insurance document that shows the insurance company details, the horse details and the sum insured. This document must be a current and valid certificate. Out of date certificates will not be accepted. 3. Show invitation – if travelling for an international competition, you can send a copy of the invitation letter or proof of your entries (receipt from show). 4. Certificate of minimum value – This can be obtained from a DEFRA approved valuer or a judge of the approved breed society which has issued the pony’s passport.
Tripartite Agreement (TPA) is an agreement between the UK, Rep of Ireland & France that allows Equidae to move between these countries without the need for a TRACES certificate. All horses will still require a valid passport and an export licence, if the purpose of that move is for a show, competition or breeding purposes within the TPA.

We will liaise with DEFRA and your nominated vet to obtain these documents. DEFRA state that "...applications may take up to 10 working days to process", but in reality this timeframe can often be reduced by use of email and fax.
